How to Estimate Yardage for a Simple Rectangular Project

Convert every finished rectangle into a cut rectangle by adding seam, hem, overlap, or binding allowances. Determine how many cut widths fit across the fabric’s measured usable width, divide the quantity by that number, round rows up, and multiply rows by the cut length. Add directional-repeat matching, prewash shrinkage, squaring, and a project-specific error allowance before converting total inches to yards. Keep all dimensions in one unit until the final step.

Use the base formula

Pieces per row equals the whole-number floor of U divided by W. Rows required equals Q divided by pieces per row, rounded up. Base length equals rows multiplied by L. For the example, floor(42 ÷ 14) equals 3 pieces per row. Six pieces need 2 rows. Base length equals 2 × 20, or 40 inches. Divide by 36 to obtain 1.111 yards before contingencies.

Calculate in a transparent sequence

  1. Sketch the finished object and list every rectangular component separately.
  2. Add seam allowances to both sides of each sewn dimension; add hems, turnbacks, closure overlap, or quilting trim according to the plan.
  3. Record usable width after selvages and defects.
  4. Test whether rotating a piece is permitted by grain, nap, print, and construction.
  5. Calculate pieces per row, rows, and base length for each distinct size.
  6. Add repeat matching, shrinkage, squaring, and a documented contingency.
  7. Convert inches to yards by dividing by 36 and round up to a purchasable increment.

Add allowances correctly

A finished 13-by-19-inch placemat with a half-inch seam on all sides needs a 14-by-20-inch cut rectangle, because the allowance is added twice to each dimension. A pillow back with an envelope closure needs additional overlap, not merely seam allowance. A quilted panel may be cut oversized and trimmed after quilting. Use the project method; do not attach a universal extra inch.

Handle direction and repeats

If a floral has a vertical repeat, each row may need to begin at the same motif. Round the row advance up to the next complete repeat and add alignment space. A one-way print may prohibit 90-degree rotation, while a solid might allow it if grain requirements do. Make a paper or digital scale layout when different rectangle sizes share one length.

Worked example with contingency

Six 14-by-20-inch backs on 42 usable inches require 40 base inches. The fabric is prewashed already and has no direction, but the cutter adds 4 inches for straightening and a practice cut, producing 44 inches. Forty-four divided by 36 equals 1.222 yards. If the shop sells quarter-yard increments, the purchase becomes 1.25 yards. The note shows why, rather than silently rounding to an unexplained number.

Limitations

This approach works for simple rectangles, not fitted garments, curved pieces, bias layouts, complex quilt blocks, upholstery, or irregular remnants. It does not guarantee a particular shrinkage rate or mistake allowance. Fabric widths and seller cuts vary, and a short cut can matter. Recalculate when any input changes, keep units consistent, and avoid using estimated yardage for regulated, load-bearing, or protective products without qualified design requirements.

Combine unlike rectangles with a layout

When a project uses several sizes, calculating each group independently can overstate yardage because empty spaces may accept smaller pieces. Draw a scale rectangle representing usable fabric width and place full cut shapes inside it with grain arrows. Repeat the layout for each row, then total row lengths. Preserve clearance for cutting and do not interlock shapes so tightly that ruler or shears cannot make the planned cut.
