Fabric Width Explained: How Usable Width Affects Yardage

Quick answer

Fabric width is the crosswise distance from one selvage to the other, but usable width is the narrower area that remains after excluding selvages, holes, distorted print, wash shrinkage, and any margin required by the pattern. Yardage depends on how many pieces fit across that usable width. Measure the actual cloth, honor grain and print direction, and lay out full-size shapes before buying or cutting. A “44-inch fabric” should not be planned as forty-four perfect cutting inches.

Measure actual usable width

  1. Inspect the fabric in good light before washing for holes, stains, skew, or print defects.
  2. Prewash only if the project plan calls for it, then dry and press by the fabric instructions.
  3. Lay a representative section relaxed on a flat surface without stretching.
  4. Measure perpendicular to the selvages at several locations.
  5. Subtract each selvage and any visibly unusable boundary.
  6. Record the smallest reliable usable width rather than the most generous point.
  7. Keep a swatch with fiber, care, lot, direction, and measured width.

Suppose a project needs ten rectangles that each require 10 inches across the fabric after cutting allowance and spacing. With 42 usable inches, four rectangles fit per row, so three rows are needed. With 58 usable inches, five fit per row, so two rows are needed. The wider fabric may reduce length, but only if grain, design direction, and piece rotation allow the five-piece arrangement.

Add layout constraints

A one-way print prevents turning pieces upside down. Nap, pile, or directional sheen may require every piece to face the same way. Plaid matching can consume width and length to align motifs. Large repeats may require starting each visible section at the same motif. Bias-cut pieces use diagonal orientation, and a fold may be unsuitable when the print is off-grain. Each restriction belongs in the layout before yardage is rounded.

Worked comparison: cushion fronts

Four 18-inch cushion fronts need cut squares based on the pattern’s allowance. Fabric A has 42 usable inches, fitting two squares across and needing two full rows. Fabric B has only 34 usable inches despite a wider nominal claim after damaged edges are excluded, so only one square fits across and four rows are required. Recording usable width prevents a shortage that a bolt-end label would hide.

Buying checklist

  • Pattern width category matches the candidate cloth.
  • Usable width, not just nominal width, is documented.
  • Fiber, care, shrinkage plan, and color lot are acceptable.
  • All pieces honor grainline and permitted rotation.
  • Motif repeat, nap, plaids, and matching are added.
  • Seam allowances and cutting kerf are included.
  • A project-specific contingency covers squaring and mistakes.

When buying online

Ask the seller for nominal width, whether selvages are included, fiber labeling, repeat size, and any known flaws. Product photos can obscure scale and direction. Do not infer usable width from weight or country of origin. If exact cutting efficiency determines success, order a swatch or extra length within budget and return policy, then verify before cutting.

Limitations

This guide does not replace a commercial pattern layout or guarantee shrinkage. Handwoven, vintage, stretchy, tubular, lace, embroidered, border-print, and prequilted fabrics may have irregular edges or multiple usable zones. Conversion between imperial and metric units needs consistent rounding. Plan each fabric separately and do not splice a safety-critical or load-bearing project merely to compensate for insufficient width.

Record width after every treatment

Measure before washing, after drying, and after pressing. A width change can alter pieces-per-row even when length shrinkage receives more attention. Store both nominal and post-treatment usable widths in the cutting worksheet so later borders and binding use the same evidence.
