Prepare accurate squares

Sew two units

Two 5-inch squares use the beginner oversize formula for a 4-inch finished unit. After sewing and cutting, each pressed unit is slightly larger than 4.5 inches. The ruler’s diagonal follows the seam while the first two edges are trimmed, then the unit rotates and finishes at exactly 4.5 inches. Two identical starting squares produced two mirrored HSTs.

Common problems
Blunt points usually mean the seam diagonal did not reach the unit corners during trimming. Wavy seams can come from pulling bias or sliding the iron. Avoid solving a systemic shortfall by stretching blocks; remake the sample with a larger starting square or corrected seam.
Limitations
Formula conventions differ, especially when a pattern names unfinished size rather than finished size. Thick, stretchy, loosely woven, or slippery fabrics may need extra oversizing and stabilization. This method creates two mirrored units and may not place fussy-cut motifs predictably. Rotary cutting and diagonal seams require safe tools and controlled handling. Do not reproduce a proprietary quilt design merely because the unit method is traditional.
Count units before cutting
Each square pair yields two HSTs. Divide the project quantity by two and round up to determine pairs, then add a test pair and any documented contingency. If the design needs unequal color combinations, calculate each pairing separately so a global total does not produce the wrong distribution.
